EDM Limited is participating at the Rochdale Skills Event today. The event is designed to introduce local young people to the world of work and prepare them for the job market. Approximately 2,000 students from secondary schools across the borough will visit the event.

Tony Bermingham, EDM’s Managing Director said:

“EDM is pleased to take part in this initiative in our local community which encourages pupils to engage with businesses in their catchment areas. It is a great opportunity to promote the company to employees of the future and help guide young people towards rewarding careers with companies like EDM.”

A number of EDM staff will be on-hand to meet with the students including representation from Sales, Design & Engineering, Manufacturing and one of the company’s apprentices will be available to share information about his work experience with EDM.

The company has successfully established an apprentice scheme which has attracted a number of local young persons. The company’s first apprentice qualified for his HND last year following seven years of study and on-the-job training. Following the success of the first apprenticeship, EDM has taken on new apprentices each year and the company currently has four apprentices engaged on the scheme.

EDM’s apprentices have an opportunity to gain experience working in several departments both in the office and the factory including planning and design; interactive woodwork; engineering on machines; electrical; lathes; manual milling and CNC milling. This on-the-job experience is complemented by a class-based curriculum which can include modules such as engineering science; mechanical principles; engineering design; industrial robot technology and applications of pneumatics and hydraulics.

Tony Bermingham adds:

“EDM is committed to providing career opportunities to local young people and the Rochdale Skills Event provides an ideal opportunity to showcase the career prospects that we can offer. Leaving school can be a daunting time and events like this can help inform, inspire and motivate young people.”
